3D Profile Measuring System

The Laser Profile Measuring System LPM-321 integrates a stepper motor driven pan and tilt mount (1) to rotate the long range distance meter (2).

When scanning, the pan and tilt mount triggers range distance measurements at angular positions defined by the user selected scan pattern. The distance meter is able to provide up to three “target distance” and “signal intensity” pairs per measurement. These results are transmitted to the pan and tilt mount,  which combines the range and signal intensity pairs with the angle values of horizontal and vertical axes, thus forming the total measurement result.

Scan data (consisting of these measurement results) are transmitted to an external laptop (3) via a LAN TCP/IP interface (4). Images from the optional camera (5) are provided via an USB interface (6).

Together with the telescope (7), a joystick (8), available additional to the positioning handwheels, enables smooth alignment of the distance meter. Alignment to certain positions can be used to easily specify the scan area by defining the current alignment position as the upper/lower left/right corner of the desired scan area.

The RIEGL  software package RiProfile (9), running on the laptop, combines and processes scan data and camera images. It supports sensor configuration, data acquisition, data visualization, data manipulation, and data archiving. RiProfile runs on platforms WINDOWS XP and 2000 SP2.
